WHAT HAPPENS AT HiCity

A typical day at HiCity begins with a free "cuppa" and an opportunity to meet with Support Staff and fellow Workers. Starting at 8.00am we then go to our allocated work station or if gardening to the van ready to go out on site.

Morning tea is at 10.00am, lunch at 12.30pm and afternoon tea at 2.45pm with tea and coffee supplied.

We the finish work at 4.30pm except for Fridays when we finish at 2.30pm, this gives us a chance to do things like go to the bank or go shopping, it also gives us a long weekend every week.

Payday is on Thursdays and we can have our money in cash or paid into our bank accounts. We can get HiCity to let Centrelink know how much we earn: this way we don't make any mistakes with our benefits. How much we are paid depends on the amount of work we do, this is worked out by the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service who see us working and tell HiCity how much we should be getting.

There is a Workers Committee at HiCity, they meet once a month to talk about working conditions. Two people from the committee go to the Board of Management Monthly Meetings and present a report. Once a month everybody working at HiCity meets to hear from the Workers Committee and suggest new ideas.

We also have an Occupational Health and Safety Committee which has Workers represented. This Committee meets once a month and talks about ways to keep us safe at work. They suggest improvements to management.

Once a year we have a private meeting with our Support Worker, Employment and Training Manager and someone from outside HiCity, this can be a parent, carer or friend. HiCity will not hold this meeting unless someone from outside is there. This is to make sure we understand what is being said. This meeting is called an Employment Assistance Plan and we make plans about what we will be doing at work for the next year.

HiCity is very keen for us to get training on lots of things. We have Literacy and Numeracy classes every week for a small group, we also get training for first aid, how to hold meetings etc. All this training is paid for by HiCity.

We have a terrific Social Club at HiCity. To be a member is free and there is always something happening like theatre nights, dinner dances, trips interstate, camping week-ends. We get a newsletter every week telling us what is being planned. HiCity helps us save for these things if we want them to.
